The Comedy Theatre is one of the few, if not the only one, in Bucharest with a well kept archive since the very first show in 1961. For this rebranding I had the chance to go through every box of that incredible collection, to discover original posters and leaflets and to follow the raise and fall of their logo. They used to have a simple bold typo and experimented a lot on the leaflets and, as times went worse in the communist period, quality dropped in both print and concept. After the communism fall in 1989, a freestyle era emerged with the help of computers, yet with no graphic direction. In 2022, their logo was lacking power, presence or vision.
My intention was to regain the bold expression from the past, but to be relevant in the present and interesting in the long term. The smiley face was originally drawn by a Romanian well known actor & artist - Horațiu Mălăele and it was an element to keep. I modified its expression to look more friendly and witty.
Beside the regular redesigned materials, like tickets, business cards, front signage and templates for social media and print, I am quite proud I could design their website to be more functional and easier to surf. I also appreciate they accepted to change the absolutely horrid mandatory stickers about fire safety and toilet signs and to go for redesigned icons with a simple and consistent look, cut in Plexiglas, that integrated better in the theatre space. Small steps that hopefully will get noticed.
